Internet buzz judges Parade Uniforms 'Best Dressed' at Olympic

Canadian Olympians unveiled their official parade uniforms in the Parade of Nations at Beijing 2008 Opening Ceremony. The uniforms consist of a super lightweight athletic windbreaker featuring a Canada fusion print, coupled with an a-line skirt for women and club trouser for men.

"Hbc has a long history of supporting the Canadian Olympic Movement and athletes," says Jeffrey Sherman, Hbc President and CEO. "We are proud to dress them for their debut at the Games and to financially support them in getting there."

The pieces use a state-of-the-art "Sublimation" printing technique, a gradation of Maple Leafs layered over a graphic 8 all over pattern. Each windbreaker has a large maple leaf printed on the back body and "Canada" bamboo-inspired script stacked vertically on the front as homage to Chinese calligraphy.

"Our athletes were thrilled with their uniforms during Outfitting this week and have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from other athletes in the Olympic Village," says Tu Ly, Hbc Olympic Apparel designer.

"The Canadian team uniforms have already been rated as best-dressed by Internet bloggers in the days leading up to the Games."

The designs for parade wear and the clothing designed for the medal podium are athlete-only pieces not available for sale to the public. The latest Olympic collection is a highly-styled fusion of Canadian and Chinese symbolism.

"Canada" is proudly written in both English and Chinese and the Maple Leaf is used on select items. The primary colours for the collection are hometown red and white.

Hbc's Olympic design team worked with high-performance athletes from across Canada to design the collection. The collection meets fashion and functional needs with clothing that incorporates performance fabrics that provide UV protection, four-way stretch, odour resistance, and wicking and cooling properties for ultimate comfort in Beijing's expected climate. The clothing is also eco-friendly, using materials such as bamboo, cotton blends, cacona and organic cotton.

Canada's Olympic team members in Beijing each received 25 items as part of the 2008 team package, including leisure wear, jackets, pants and shorts, hoodies, T-shirts, shoes and luggage.

Most of the pieces will be available for sale as replica wear both in Bay and Zellers stores, online and at Canada House and the BC Pavilion during the 2008 Olympic Games.

Hbc is the Official Clothing and Luggage Supplier to the Canadian Olympic team and the Official Department Store Partner and General Merchandise Retailer in Canada until 2012.

The Hbc Foundation has also committed to raising $20 million through 2012 to help fund our athletes, their training facilities and their national sports organizations. To date, the company has already raised nearly $6 million toward its goal.

Funds are raised on Canada Day at the Hbc Run for Canada in communities across the country and at an annual charity golf tournament.
