A football perspective shows the undertaking of the team's efforts to inspect so much fabric in a short amount of time. Professional football fields are 6,040 square yards, including end zones. Thus, DSCP personnel hand inspected cloth that was more than the surface area of five football fields.

Brett West, a product specialist, said inspecting the fabric was performed under difficult conditions and only 45 percent of it was acceptable. "The fabric had to be handled manually, rolling out 60-yard sections at a time for inspection," said West. "Each roll required several people to position it for inspection and return to storage, restoring action or disposal."

Besides ensuring that quality fabric was used to make the uniforms, more than 70 of the ceremonial uniforms required special tailoring that was not part of the basic contract. Clothing and textile personnel are still receiving last minute requirements from customers.

Operating within the Defense Logistics Agency and the U.S. Department of Defense, DSCP annually supplies $13.4 billion worth of food, clothing and textiles, medicines, medical equipment, construction equipment, and supplies and services for America's warfighters, their eligible dependents and other federal customers worldwide.

The Defense Logistics Agency provides supply support and technical and logistics services to the military services, several civilian agencies and allied forces.
