The workers attached to the National Union of the Clothing Industry (NUCI) have threatened to go on strike if their demands for an increase in salaries are not met.

The Union has conducted several rounds of meetings with the industry employers, but so far the most of these discussions have ended in failure.

The workers are demanding a raise in salaries from the US $80 per month they are drawing currently to $180 per month, an increase of 120 percent.

Inflation in Zimbabwe is at an all time high and the average wages in the country are way below the official poverty line figure of $500 per month.

Employers are threatening to import to import textile products, by saying that it is far cheaper to import from Asia, rather than manufacture it here.
