3000 garment workers continue to strike

A two-day strike against poor working conditions and low wages had been staged by about 3000 garment workers of the Sky High Garment Factory in Dangkor district.

The garment workers are protesting against the reduction in money wages by 1,000-riel, lack of compensation or assistance for those who lose vehicles on company property, and unpredictable, indefinite work stoppages.

Coordinator for the Khmer Youth Federation of Trade Unions, Ms. Mai Vathana said that the factory owners cheat workers. For instance her employers had failed to execute on the promise of building a child-care centre on factory grounds and to honour previous agreements.

The Ministry would held a meeting to mediate on this dispute, informed Mr. Khieu Savuth, Deputy Director of the Department of Labour Disputes at the Ministry of Labour, adding that the Ministry will try to settle the issue as it doesn't want this protest to happen again.

Factory owners haven't responded to the strike even after two days, said Ms. Vathana. However, Mr. Savath was, however optimistic, regarding the quick and positive results in this direction.
