Garment Industry of Fiji has been suffering from losses since the new wage order came into effect. Under this order, all the garment industry owners have had to increase the wages of their workers.

Reacting to this new wage order that came into effect from July 1, one of the garment industry owners said that the wage increase for garment industry workers has taken its toll on the country's ability to compete with the foreign garment manufacturers.

This garment industry owner wants exemption from the new order. His application in this regard, is being processed by the Ministry of Labour, which has formed a committee to look into this matter, informed the Minister for Labour, Mr. Filipe Bole.

Due to this new policy, workforce in the factories has been reduced, and the industry is facing order slump, besides, which, the country is becoming a more expensive place to export goods. Reserve Bank's latest figures showed that the export for the 1st quarter of 2009 has slipped down.
