Taking a major initiative, the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) recently held a single country display in New York for two days.

About 45 companies set up their products display at Hotel Pennsylvania.

The President of the BKMEA and fourteen members of the association personally supervised the display that was to project quality and variety of knitwear products from Bangladesh.

Ending of textile quotas, at the beginning of this year, ended special treatment to Bangladeshi exports and as a consequence, manufacturers and exporters of Bangladesh face stronger competition.

Manufacturers and exporters of Bangladesh got the opportunity to persuade buyers to apprise US buyers of quality products at reasonable prices.

For Bangladesh, knitwear industry is a major foreign exchange earner and also provides employment to millions.

Since plastic products have secured part of the market demand for jute products, it should be mentioned that traditional exports of Bangladesh, mainly jute fibre and hessian have lost markets.

Other exportable commodities like shrimp, fish and beef are still experiencing growth infancy. Thus, garment and knitwear industry should be promoted in a big way for exports.
