The government of Papua New Guinea (PNG) plans to focus and fund establishment of the cotton, textiles and garment industry in the country. Minister for national planning and monitoring Richard Maru feels that garmenting skills of local women can be used in the sector, which can bring good returns and contribute to development of the country’s economy.

“We don’t even have an industry body in some sectors like textile for example. Do we keep importing?,” Maru asked while addressing officials of his department, PNG media reported.

He said the department should now start planning on how it could help development of textile and garment sector which can bring sustainable returns. He added that the development of the industry would benefit local women who can use their garmenting skills to earn a living.

Meanwhile, the PNG government is working to register the Garment and Textile Training Institute (GTTI) as a national apprenticeship and trade testing centre to boost the textile industry in the country. This is part of the government’s commitment to create an environment conducive to the development of small and medium enterprises (SME).

Since its establishment in 2002, more than 3,000 participants have graduated from the government-run GTTI, earlier called Women Textile Training Centre, under the SME Corporation. The institute has been training men and women in tailoring and textile-related skills.

Separately, the ministry of trade, commerce and industry of PNG had last year directed the SME Corporation to conduct a study into the textile and garment industry of the country. The study aims to identify measures and policies that can be put into place for cutting down on import bills and manufacture high quality garments. (RKS)
