Solapur seeks to become major school uniform hub

Following a Union government nod to set up a Garments Park and a new industry zone in Solapur in Maharashtra, a garment manufacturers association in Solapur is seeking investments from domestic and global manufacturers in the Park. The major aim of the body is to make Solapur a major uniform and apparel manufacturing hub once the Park becomes operational.

A news agency quoted Nilesh Shah, vice president of the Solapur Readymade Kapad Utpadak Sangh, as saying that they seek investment from domestic and global garment producers, since Solapur has the potential to become a major supplier of school uniforms in the whole country.

“Solapur district currently houses around 1,000 clothing production units and is an attractive investment destination, as it is well connected with rail and road network with the rest of the country and also because of easy availability of raw materials, transportation and labour,” Shah was quoted as informing.

In order to seek investments, the trade body in partnership with the Maharashtra textiles ministry is hosting the country's first international uniform and garment exhibition at Solapur from January 5-7, 2017. (AR)
