Retail company Stance has launched a new mobile self-checkout solution by Moltin that allows customers to completely skip lines and kiosks and check out on their smartphone, no app download required. Moltin is a microservices solution that gives organisations the ultimate flexibility to take an experience-first approach to commerce with powerful APIs.

The solution was built with Moltin’s API-first commerce platform and was deployed in Stance stores. When shopping in a Stance store, a customer simply navigates to a short URL from their phone where they can scan the barcodes on product tags and check out using Apple Pay, Google Pay, or a credit card.

Unlike other self-checkout solutions that require consumers to download an app, the Moltin-based solution deployed by Stance is a browser-based, progressive web application that is optimised for mobile. It is designed to behave like an app, but since it is browser based, it provides the ease of an ecommerce checkout experience in a physical store.

Paul Zaengle, executive vice president of direct to consumer at Stance said, “We are really excited to be at the forefront of the retail experience by offering a truly hassle-free self-checkout experience in our stores. People don’t want to wait in line, and they don’t want to download an app to avoid a line either. This solution combines the richness of a physical retail store visit with the convenience of ecommerce to give our guests the best experience possible. We believe it will raise the bar in terms of what customers will come to expect from retailers. Moltin was able to develop and deploy this solution in less than two months, which is a testament to the power of its API platform.”

On the backend, Moltin’s APIs are submitting product information to the application, creating the cart, adding products and processing the checkout. Moltin’s API backend allows the solution to integrate seamlessly with Stance’s existing infrastructure, including their KWI POS system and Stripe payments stack.

Moltin will make the solution available to all customers as a reference application that can be customised to unique needs. Moltin’s APIs can connect to existing catalogues, payment gateways and POS systems, allowing retailers to manage store catalogues, inventory, and order processing with their existing systems if desired.

Jamus Driscoll, CEO of Moltin said, “We’re extremely excited to partner with Stance on this initiative. As a brand defined by its creativity and technical innovation, it’s no surprise that Stance wanted to push the boundaries of traditional commerce by making self-checkout as simple as possible for its customers. It’s a great example of the types of innovative experiences enabled by Moltin. It’s proof that cutting-edge solutions are not only for those with massive resources and footprints — the future is accessible to everyone.” (GK)
