Rodolfo, secretary in the department of trade and industry (DTI) and vice chairman and managing head of the board of investments (BOI).

Despite setbacks, the Philippine garment, textile, and leather goods sector continues to be have immense potential in contributing to jobs and economic growth, a DTI press release quoted Rodolfo as saying.

Rodolfo was speaking recently at the Philippine Garment/Leather Goods Industries & Fabrics Expo.

The resurgence initiative includes crafting an industry roadmap that will chart the future of the industry’s growth based on assessment of the current situation and economic performance, identification of industry roadblocks, he said.

Other efforts include the provision of shared service facilities and technical support for micro-, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), development or adoption of technologies on utilizing plant fibres, including post-harvest technologies on fibre extraction, extensive industry promotion, establishment of textile research laboratories and innovation centres, and opening of additional courses relevant to the wearables industry.

The government is helping garment manufacturers source better textiles from abroad.

The country is currently exploring the possibility of a preferential trade arrangement (PTA) with Turkey to help garments manufacturers and exporters, he added. (DS)
