Clothing retailer H&M has roped in Germany-based Industrial Solar GmbH, a subsidiary of the Clean Industry Solutions Holding (CISH), to build a solar project for one of its biggest textile suppliers in India, Arvind Ltd. The company aims to reduce its carbon footprint in the fashion industry by using renewable clean energy and decreasing emissions.

H&M and Industrial Solar have signed the agreement regarding an engineering study, which will be the first phase of the addition of a concentrating solar collector to the textile production of Arvind Ltd., CISH said in a press release.

The deal requires Industrial Solar to construct a demonstration project for Arvind Ltd. that will provide the proof of concept for the incorporation of a concentrating solar thermal system to produce direct steam for textile processes.

The order value of the first design engineering of the solar process heat system is €46,000. With a capacity of almost 8.6 MWth, the planned collector field will cover an area of 20,000 m2 to generate saturated steam at 9 bars.

H&M has committed to decreasing its emissions by 56 per cent until 2030. It is focused on the implementation of renewable clean energy in its manufacturing facilities which are responsible for 70 per cent of garments’ climate impact, added the release.

H&M has also halted onboarding new suppliers with on-site coal boilers into its supply chain and now invests in its suppliers to enable them to transition to renewable energy sources.
