The National Day of Carpet was celebrated in Turkmenistan on the last Sunday of May, 2011. Admirers of hand-made carpets from across the globe gathered in Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, to take part in the festivities.

The festivities, including an international exhibition 'Carpet – the soul of Turkmens' and the eleventh Conference of the World Association of Connoisseurs of Hand-Made Turkmen Carpets, allowed participants to become familiar with the intricate process of creating the most delicate pieces of Turkmenistan's national handicraft.

In Turkmenistan, carpet weaving is a matter of national pride, and has been accorded the rank of high art. The five carpet guls (designs used in producing rugs) that adorn the flag of Turkmenistan reflect the significance of carpet weaving in the lives of Turkmen people. The carpet guls can also be found on the coat of arms.

To make wool carpets, fine wool of Saraja sheep is coloured using natural vegetable dyes that are noted for good quality and durability.

The Turkmenistan Government strives to ensure proper conditions to encourage creative work of local carpet weavers, as it gives great importance to the growth and preservation of the art of carpet weaving.
