India's cotton area harvested projected to be down in Aug 2021: USDA

The US department of agriculture (USDA) has forecast India’s cotton production at 29 million 480-pound bales, unchanged from last month and up by 2 per cent from last year. Area harvested is forecast at 12.9 million hectares, down marginally from last month and last year due to the slow progression or pause of the Southwest Monsoon and competition with other crops.
Yields this month are forecast to reach 489 kg per hectare, up slightly from July this year and up by 3 per cent from 2020.
According to the India Department of Agriculture’s All India Crop Situation report dated August 6, planting progress in the central region, which comprises 75 per cent of total cotton production, is down nearly 5 per cent from the same period last year.
Despite the Monsoon covering the entire country, cumulative rainfall is normal in Maharashtra but below normal in Gujarat. The pace of planting activities is slowing in the central region. The early-planted crop is in the vegetative stage going into the flowering stage in central India.
The satellite-derived MODIS normalised difference vegetation index anomaly analysis showed crops above the long-term average despite the dry conditions in major producing areas of Gujarat and parts of Maharashtra. So far, there are no reports of major pests and disease incidences.
However, farmers are monitoring for white fly in the northern areas of Punjab and pink bollworms in central India, which could impact yields, USDA said.
Northern India completed sowing cotton in May. Planting in central India should be completed in August. Planting activities have started in the southern region, including the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
Cotton is grown only in the kharif season from May to October. Harvesting starts in September and can continue into February.
