Pakistan-Germany discuss leather trade prospects

Quality and price are the two factors that would govern the rise in Pakistan's leather exports to Germany, said Dr. Tilo Klinner, the Consul General of Germany.
During a meeting with representatives of Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA), he informed that Pakistan's leather and leather item exports to Germany grew by 45 percent during last fiscal year.
Dr. Klinner further said that all leather goods imported from Pakistan are not consumed by the German market itself, and some of them are re-exported to neighbouring countries.
German firms operating in Pakistan are doing good business as compared to those firms operating in other countries of the region, he said.
He said Pakistan is confronting several challenges, but the country has risen above them and he is optimistic about its future.
He hoped that Pakistan would soon earn free access to the European markets through the EU GSP plus scheme.
Giving a detailed overview of the trade relations between Pakistan and Germany, Dr. Klinner said cooperation between the two economies greatly relied on the areas and sectors that satisfied the most urgent and extreme needs of Pakistani society.
Dr. Klinner assured that he would raise PTA's plea for transfer of technology for recycling waste water at least for use in industries, before concerned parties.
PTA Diplomatic Committee Chairman Gulzar Feroze said leather and leather items exports to Germany grew at a year-on-year rate of 45 percent to US$ 140 million during the last fiscal.
PTA Chairman, SM Naseem called on the German Consul General to excuse genuine PTA members from appearing before the consulate for interview for obtaining visa.
