Autumn Weather Arrived in the East. The Most Significant Rain in Weeks Spurred a Surge in Seasonal Sales. The West Endured More Wet Weather.
Weekend Review (13-14 October 2007): For those along the East Coast, fall-like conditions continued with more typical mid-October temperatures. Highs were recorded in the 50s and 60s North, 70s South. Morning low temperatures in the 30s and 40s helped to spur a surge in seasonal sales, particularly for sweaters, fleece, fall footwear, etc.
Soup and hot beverage sales were likely more robust. While the Northeast U.S. saw clearing through the weekend, much of northern New England and Eastern Canada experienced cloudy conditions with periods of heavy rain (snow north) right through the weekend.
A warming trend took hold in the Central and Southern Plains eastward into the Carolinas with high temperatures in the 70s and 80s. A strong storm system that provided late week rains to California and the West Coast moved eastward across the Rockies and into the Western High Plains providing moderate to heavy rains and mountain snows.
Temperatures were significantly cooler across the Intermountain West and Northern Plains northward into the Canadian Prairies.
Last Week (week-ending 10/13/2007): It was a week of strong changes in the weather across North America. Early to mid week, unseasonably warm temperatures were prevalent across the entire eastern half of the U.S. and Canada with temperatures averaging 10 to 15 degrees above normal levels.
