A notice concerning child labor issues was sent to Delhi Government by the state High Court on October 31.
On a petition filed by a voluntary agency, the court commanded Delhi Government to take necessary steps to rehabilitate child laborers rescued from south Delhi's embroidery units.
Under rights of Public Interest Litigation (PIL), the Bachpan Bachao Andolan('Save Childhood Agitation') of Swami Agnivesh pointed out the laxity on part of the state Government to disregard these children as bonded laborers.
Suspending the matter till December 12, the court has sought answers from Department of Social Welfare of the city Government. It also expressed apprehensions stating that regardless of repeated issuance of notifications, the system has constantly neglected the need to check child labor in the capital.
In an exclusive interview with Fibre2fashion, when asked about opinions on the employment of child labor, Shri Vijay Kumar Agarwal, Chairman of Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) commented-“The recent Gap Inc matter is an isolated case. As for measures to check child labour, we have prepared and sent a legal affidavit to all our exporters stating that no such practice would be entertained by our council.”
