Dhaka Tannery Estate at Savar to remain a mirage

The present government has asked the owners to bear the cost of building the Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP). While the cost was initially stated to be around Tk830 million, it has now been revised and touches Tk4,340 million as the cost of construction and other materials have increased in the meantime. Tanners are unwilling to bear such a huge expenditure all by themselves and have asked the Government to share a part of the investments required. This complexity in setting up the CETP is also hindering the shifting process.

Mr Tipu Sultan affirmed that the leather industry is doing its best to adopt safer and cleaner technology to protect the environment from the chemicals coming out of tanneries. If the Government meets their demands and agrees to invest around US $60 million for establishment of CETP, they would go for production within three years.
