Around five years back, the Shivaji University of Kolhapur in the state of Maharashtra had decided to apply for Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) of 'Kolhapuri Chappals', which is a popular and traditional footwear from Kolhapur.

The university is taking efforts to protect the footwear from outsiders who try to exploit product's brand name. It had also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Central Leather Research Institute, Chennai. The MoU created a community development program for cobblers in Kolhapur.

Moreover, a project named 'RSP 2009 project' had been launched in 2009 to lend a hand to the cobbler community and the artisans in Kolhapur. Government has allocated around Rs.25 million to impart training to Kolhapuri chappal manufacturers regarding effective leather processing, informed Dr PM Bhonsale, Nodal officer, RSP 2009 project of Shivaji University.

He added that the university has established a common facility centre and installed new machinery. This centre has trained around 120 artisans in crafting Kolhapuri chappal till now. It targets to train 1000 artisans who are well-versed in their field. The footwear designed by these artisans are retailed in around 35 countries at over Rs. 6,000 and at about Rs. 3,000 in India.
