Americans spend about one-tenth of their shopping dollars online, which shows that mobile e-commerce sales are rising quickly, according to a survey of 501 shopping app users by Clutch, which found people most frequently use e-commerce apps from pure online retailers such as Amazon, mass merchant retailers like Target and the restaurant industry.

In 2018, 40 per cent of e-commerce sales came from mobile devices. By 2021, experts expect mobile e-commerce to occupy more than half (54 per cent) of overall e-commerce, a press release from Clutch said citing the survey results.

E-commerce app users most frequently use pure online retail apps (42 per cent), which experts say often offer superior user experiences than other types of e-commerce apps.

People primarily use shopping apps to check prices (71 per cent) and make purchases (62 per cent). But, nearly one-quarter of people (22 per cent) navigate through brick-and-mortar stores using a shopping app, suggesting that businesses with physical locations should integrate the in-app and in-store experiences.

People who use pure online retail apps the most are likely to make purchases (90 per cent), check prices (88 per cent) and get recommendations on similar products (34 per cent) at a higher rate than users of other e-commerce apps. Experts recommend that small businesses avoid measuring their app’s success against pure online retailer apps and should instead target their specific market.

Most respondents (65 per cent) say they use mobile apps to receive deals and offers that are only available in the app. Still, experts caution that businesses should avoid simply offering heavily discounted products and instead create apps that foster community and browsability.

Nearly half (42 per cent) of respondents most frequently use pure online retail apps such as Amazon and Overstock. Other frequently used types of apps include mass merchant retailers such as Target and Walmart (28 per cent) and restaurant apps such as McDonald’s and Domino’s (20 per cent). (DS)
