Issues like e-commerce and increasing global protectionism would be reportedly discussed in the meeting of G-20 trade ministers at Tsukuba in Japan on June 8 and 9, where India would be represented by commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal. Matters hindering the functioning of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) may also be taken up there.

G-20 is a grouping of developed and developing nations.

Matters that are hindering the functioning of the World Trade Organization (WTO) may also come up in the ministerial meeting on trade and digital economy, according to a news agency report.

Some developed nations want to negotiate an agreement on e-commerce at the WTO, but India feels it should be discussed only after having a consensus. Multinational firms have already flagged concerns on certain provisions of the draft e-commerce policy, floated by India’s commerce and industry ministry.

Seventy-six WTO members have already launched talks on e-commerce. India is not part of this. (DS)
