India to bring out national e-com policy within 12 months

India will put in place an institutional framework to bring out a national e-commerce policy within 12 months, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal reportedly told attendees at his second meeting with stakeholders. Several foreign e-commerce firms have raised concerns over some points in India’s draft national e-commerce policy pertaining to data.
An inter-ministerial panel under the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DPIIT ) would be formed to address stakeholder grievances on foreign direct investment (FDI) and draft e-commerce policy, according to a news agency report.
The government in February released the draft national e-commerce policy proposing setting up a legal and technological framework for restrictions on cross-border data flow and also laid out conditions for businesses regarding collection or processing of sensitive data locally and storing it abroad.
The minister also said India wants to engage with the world on data and e-commerce issues on a reciprocal basis.
The minister will again meet the retail and e-commerce firms to further address their issues. (DS)
