Textile ministry proposes incubation centre at Odisha NIFT

The Union Ministry of Textiles has sanctioned Rs 12 crore to set up an incubation centre at National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Bhubaneswar.

This was revealed by Sanjay Kumar Panda, secretary, ministry of textiles at 'Design Sutra - National Workshop on Promotion of Handloom & Fashion' organised by NIFT, Bhubaneswar.

He added that the incubation centre in Odisha will have a facility, wherein three units can operate simultaneously and entrepreneurs will be provided plug and play facilities.

“The textile ministry has sought three acres of land adjoining to the NIFT campus and will be the first incubation centre attached to a NIFT campus,” he informed.

The ministry has also sanctioned Rs 10 crore to develop artisans' village at Raghurajpur in Puri district through an integrated plan.

The plan includes assistance, development of roads, infrastructure for tourists, assistance to artisans and working capital.

Design Sutra has been organised to bring designers and handloom weavers together for reinventing handloom with fashion and infusing new ideas for creating a varied range of fashion products.

"NIFT through Design Sutra encourages handloom sector stakeholders to participate and understand problems impacting the sector,” chief minister Navin Patnaik said at the inaugural ceremony.

He too added, “I am sure that the deliberations will go a long way in taking handlooms to the global fashion community and help in improving the economic condition of our weavers and artisans." (AR)
