Chinese footwear manufacturers are reportedly focusing on graphene-enhanced shoes that are lightweight, self-sterilizing and deodorizing. In Jinjiang City, Fujian, China's largest production centre for sports shoes, footwear makers are adding graphene powder to soles, says Xu Zhi of the Graphene Industry and Technology Research Institute in Jinjiang.

More than 3,000 footwear companies in Jinjiang produce 40 per cent of the country's sports shoes and 20 per cent of the world's.

Xu claimed mass production is under way and the weight of each shoe will be cut to no more than 100 grams, according to a report on a portal on all news and information related to grapheme, a form of carbon consisting of a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice.

In November 2017, Graphene Flagship partners Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Italy, in collaboration with FADEL, a leading Italian shoe company based in Tuscany, developed graphene-enhanced shoes. The new GET technology, patented by FADEL, reportedly gives the footwear better thermoregulation and freshness.

Graphene is the strongest material ever tested, efficiently conducts heat and electricity and is nearly transparent. (DS)
