The latest Google virtual exhibition project has added textiles and the fashion heritage of India, allowing people to explore the rich culture of the country. Google is working with over 180 cultural institutions from around the world for 'We Wear Culture', a new project on Google Arts & Culture that brings the stories behind the clothes people wear.

More than 180 museums, fashion institutions, schools, archives and other organisations from the fashion hubs of New York, London, Paris, Tokyo, São Paulo and elsewhere came together to put three millennia of fashion at people's fingertips. Users can browse 30,000 fashion pieces. In over 450 exhibits, there are stories from the ancient Silk Road to the ferocious fashion of the British punk. Users can also meet icons and trendsetters like Coco Chanel, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent or Vivienne Westwood, says the official Google blog.

The Google's online project boasts varied weaves from across India including collections from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS), Gharchola, Patola, Ikat sarees, Paithani and more.

"The unique colourful and rich embroidery arts, applique and mirror work from different communities such as the Ahir, Rabari, Chaudhury, Patel and many others from the western part of India have also been brought online by SEWA Hansiba Museum as part of this exhibit. The exhibition by Salar Jung Museum brings alive the Sherwani and how it became the royal fashion of the Nizams from 19th century Hyderabad. Colonial Indian attires can be revisited with Dr Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum," said media reports quoting the company. (KD)
