The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended timeline for utilisation of funds for upgrading existing campuses of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) for implementation of reservation for other backward castes (OBC) students.

The extended timeline means NIFT campuses can effectively use the balance Rs 90.13 crore  up to March 2017. The earlier timeline was till March 31, 2015. The two year extension will “enable upgradation of facilities for implementation of OBC reservation in NIFT and operating the campuses more effectively and efficiently,” an official release said.

NIFT was set by the Ministry of Textiles in 1986 for imparting quality education in fashion technology. The institute offers full-time degree programmes through its fifteen campuses located at different parts of the country.

The scope of the scheme for upgradation of existing NIFT campuses and implementing reservation for OBC students is to create additional infrastructure facilities at existing NIFT campuses, construction of additional class rooms, laboratories, hostel accommodation for students, purchase of machinery and equipments etc. (RKS)
