The Japanese fashion market will stay stagnant due to a decline in birth rate and an aging population, for which the industry there needs to intensify exports, according to Akira Kawashima, senior director of Japan Fashion Week Organisation’s (JFW) textile division. Japan's fashion market is worth $90 billion, the 3rd largest after China and the United States.

The top three trends dominating the Japanese fashion scene are fusion of sports and fashion as represented by athleisure, sustainability and diversification of attitude among people toward fashion products, Kawashima told Fibre2Fashion in an interview.

JFW was set up in 2005 with the cooperation of textile and apparel manufacturers, fashion designers and distributors to strengthen and develop the international competitiveness of Japan's textile and fashion industries. It hosts events like the Amazon Fashion Week Tokyo, the Premium Textile Japan, and the JFW Japan Creation. (DS)
