The 15th Amsterdam International Fashion Week (AIFW) began in the Dutch capital with a show by designer sisters Spijkers & Spijkers. This was followed by a show of Amsterdam designer Tony Cohen's collection.

Nearly 50 journalists from abroad are covering the Fashion Week, double the number that covered the last edition of AIFW in January this year. This can be attributed to the AIFW winning the British magazine Sublime's Best International Fashion Week Award 2011.

The magazine acknowledged the AIFW for its work in innovation and sustainability in the fashion industry.

As part of the programme 'Downtown' during the AIFW, smaller events are being held across Amsterdam city in venues like clubs, studios, boutiques, and galleries. Moreover, three shopping routes in the city have been exclusively designated for fashion lovers.

Although AIFW is meant for industry insiders, a limited number of tickets are made available for the public to watch catwalk events.

The city of Amsterdam is trying to increase its fashion ranking in Europe. Presently, it is ranked sixth after London, Paris, Milan, Barcelona and Madrid.

The fashion industry in the Netherlands earns around 14 billion euros in exports and imports.
