Retailer Talbots registers modest growth in Dec sales

Nation's leading clothing e-tailer Talbots Inc announced total Company sales for fiscal December, the five weeks ended December 31, 2005, increased 3 percent to $222.8 million from $217.3 million for the five weeks ended January 1, 2005.
Comparable store sales increased 1.1 percent for the month.
Year-to-date sales for the forty-eight weeks ended December 31, 2005 increased 7 percent to $1,676.5 million from $1,571.3 million for the forty-eight weeks ended January 1, 2005.
Comparable store sales increased 2.8 percent for the forty-eight-week period.
Arnold B. Zetcher, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, commented, "Their performance throughout the holiday season was as expected, with both their November and December comparable store sales results coming in as planned.
They are pleased with the continued strength of their Talbots Kids business and their Talbots Woman large size concept.
Also during this period, they saw particularly strong Internet sales compared to last year, and they experienced a healthy increase in the sale of their Talbots gift cards versus the prior year period."
"At this time, they are not making any changes to their previous outlook for fourth quarter earnings per diluted share in the range of $0.35 - $0.37, compared to the $0.28 reported last year."
"As they move through January, traditionally a clearance month for their Company, they look forward to the continuedroll-out of their early spring merchandise assortments," concluded Mr. Zetcher.
