Leather industry in Jalandhar is facing tough times as prices of finished goods are not moving up in synch with the raw material prices.

During past four months, this hub of Punjab's leather industry has witnessed the chasm widen further.

As a result, exports decline has reached alarming proportion.

Cost of raw leather sheet has increased by Rs5 per square feet and prices of chemicals have gone up by about 10 percent and further 10 percent rise is expected in near future, informed Ajay Sharma, Executive Member, Council of Leather Exports.

Sharma stressed petrol price hike and unabated synthetic leather inflow, further escalated the situation.

Sharma pleaded that the Government take immediate steps to develop a regulatory mechanism and save the sinking leather industry of the state.
