On 13 April 2012 about 60 representatives of the fashion industries associations, education institutions, companies, designers, and financial institutions will meet in Brussels to discuss the strengths, challenges and opportunities faced by the fashion industries and to identify ways to promote their sustainable growth and competitiveness.

The workshop will concentrate on issues from the competitiveness point of view: First participants will discuss the evolution of the relations between suppliers, producers, designers and retailers in the fashion value chain.

Next they will exchange about initiatives for developing business models with higher value added. Participants will look into solutions to facilitate access to finance which caters for the special needs of the fashion industries. Last but not least, they will analyse in how far individual companies' strategies for social responsibility could be a basis for a European vision of responsible growth.

After conducting a study on the European fashion industries the European Commission will prepare as a next step a communication on the competitiveness of the fashion industries. This document will set out main lines of actions and measures at EU, national and industry level.

The fashion industries account for about 5 million of employment and contribute to 3% of the EU GDP. Fashion industries are considered as the whole value chain starting from the manufacturing of materials, through production of a broad range of fashion goods until their sale to final consumers.
