Shoe import duties by EU on Vietnam would impoverish millions of employees and erode the country's third-largest industry, claimed Le Van Bang, Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister.
Addressing officials at the EU Head Office, which was weighing import duties on Vietnamese footwear to save European manufacturers, Bang said that such an action would be detrimental for women, who comprise 80 percent of workers in Vietnam's footwear industry.
The domino effect of this move would also hurt the children, if EU refuses to help, Bang informed the press.
The EU has declined to recognize that eight Vietnamese shoemakers operate in market economy conditions, which makes it more difficult for these companies to prove they don't sell footwear in Europe below cost.
