The Gujarat Government has passed the Rs4300 crore Gems and Jewellery SEZ project to be started at Ichhapore, near Surat.
The project, if successful, will be the largest of its kind in the world, covering over ten lakh square metres.
The Central Government has been approached for final formal clearance.
The Gujarat Hira Bourse (GHB), promoter of gems and jewellery park, has requested the Government for more land for expansion.
Nanu Vanani, Secretary, GHB, explained that the response was very encouraging as more than 282 manufacturers were interested in setting up their store in the park.
Matt McDonald has been brought in as the consultant for designing the initial stage of the project, which is scheduled to be completed by May-June, 2006.
SEZ plans to emphasize value addition in the gems and jewellery sector.
