Fashion Week to aid revitalize Haiti's economy

The Republic of Haiti, the poorest country in the Americas as per the Human Development Index (HDI), is going to host the nation’s first fashion week in November.

The upcoming sartorial event is expected to revitalize the nation’s burgeoning fashion and apparel industry, which will eventually aid the country to rebuild itself after a series of devastating natural disasters, including the 2010 earthquake.

The event will give an opportunity to the home-grown talents to showcase their creations on an international platform and further help in diversifying the country’s economic portfolio and increase its competitiveness.

The sartorial extravaganza will host various runway shows produced by Haitian-born clothiers like Berny Martin for Catou, Hassan Pierre, Phelicia Dell for VèVè, David André and Clark Pauyo.

Though Haiti is going to organize its first fashion week, its native designers have been enjoying international success for a very long time.

For example, local fashion designer Michel Chataigne’s independent designs were featured during the Caribbean exhibition of London Fashion Week earlier this year.

Similarly, Bogosse, an acclaimed apparel line by the Haitian-born brothers Patrick and Fabrice Tardieu, has gained the status of a leading brand in the world of luxurious menswear.
