Eco-fashion makes its mark at New York Fashion Week

Going green is the latest buzzword in every realm of fashion industry these days. Sustainable fashion, also known as eco-fashion, is a growing trend that aims to create apparels and accessories, supporting the ethics of environmentalism.

Accordingly, eco-friendly lines are making a prominent appearance on the runways, with the most recent being the high-profile sartorial event New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2013 that concluded earlier this month.

The bi-annual fashion week showcased a range of eco-friendly apparel collections created by Nina Skarra, Kimberly Ovitz and Oskar Metsavaht.

The Scandinavian fashion designer Nina Skarra presented 100 percent biodegradable and eco-friendly clothes made of natural fibers like wool, bamboo, silk, eco-leather, soya and organic cotton at the Fashion Week.

Clothing designer Kimberly Ovitz’s eco-friendly line featured garments made of completely natural, man-made and sustainable tencel fabrics.

Brazilian eco-friendly brand ‘Osklen’ by designer Oskar Metsavaht also showcased creations made of ecological materials like fish leather and vegetable dyed waste silk at the prestigious event.

According to the eco-fashion philosophy, a product is created only after fully considering the environmental and social impacts it might have throughout its life span, including ‘carbon footprints’.
