Bono lamented that Gap was being forced move out of Africa and pointed out that they prevailed upon the company to stay on.

Giorgio Armani and Converse are the other two of the quartet which signed up to use Product Red Brand for the next five years.

Product Red American Express credit card that will feature the statement “This card is designed to eliminate HIV in Africa,” will be piloted in the UK, later this year.

One per cent of all spending will be earmarked for the Global Fund for Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the Geneva-based body set up in 2002 to fight the disease in the developing world.

American Express Chief Marketing Officer John Hayes said the card would offer a competitive interest rate and will entail no joining fee. It is estimated that about 1.5 million UK citizens comprise the 'conscience consumers' market segment who focus on the ethical values of brands.

Meanwhile, Richard Feachem, Executive Director of the global fund informed that a total of $4.7 billion has been raised mainly through governments' aid budgets, while corporate sector contributions barely crossed $5 million mark in this amount.
