Lycra brand owner Invista is delighted to announce the four finalists for the Lycra Future Designers Award – part of the WGSN Global Fashion Awards ceremony. Invista is sponsoring the global competition, which will take place at The Savoy London on 5 November, to discover the next big fashion design talent.

Born in Latin America in 2009, the Lycra Future Designers Award went global for the first time this year, attracting 254 entries from hopeful designers across six continents. Two UK students have been shortlisted; Charli Cohen (Reigate) and Shireeka Devlin (Hackney), along with Derek Clarkson (USA) and Esther Kruyer (Netherlands).

The winning student will receive a prize of Lycra fibre product to use in a forthcoming collection, as well as a consultancy with Invista global production and marketing experts worth tens of thousands of dollars.

Shortlisted activewear designer Charli says, “The opportunity to work with Invista, whose Lycra fibre technology revolutionised sportswear and is fundamental to the type of clothing I design, would be incredible. The prize would also provide an invaluable platform from which to launch my own sportswear label.”

Shireeka adds, “I am absolutely thrilled to be shortlisted for Invista’s Lycra Future Designers Award. It would be an amazing opportunity to work with such an influential company-- and having the versatile Lycra fibre to work with would give me the chance to be even more creative with new ideas for my future designs”.

Students were invited to submit at least six images and/or sketches from their latest collection, along with mood boards and supporting documentation making their case. Entries were accepted from all categories of apparel including womenswear, menswear, kidswear, activewear, denim, intimates and swim.

“The WGSN Global Fashion Awards offers the perfect international platform for Invista, owner of the Lycra brand, to discover and launch new creative talents that will help lead and design the apparel industry,” says Denise Sakuma, Invista Apparel global director of brand and communications.

The Lycra brand has a history of working with designers and uncovering new talents. The company has created campaigns with Richard Avedon featuring designs by Donna Karan and Karl Lagerfeld and worked with the late Isabella Blow in spotting new to-be designers like Alexander McQueen, Matthew Williamson and Julian MacDonald. Lycra brand has supported the initial career of Zac Posen, Basso Broke and, more recently, WGSN ‘s 2011 awarded new talent designer Eudon Choi.

The WGSN Global Fashion Awards are staged by the world’s leading trend and style forecaster and recognise innovation in fashion and retail design on a worldwide scale. Categories range from best designers of womenswear, menswear, accessories and footwear to best design teams of denim, intimates & swim, sports and activewear and best store and e-store.
