As India becomes economically more powerful, the approximately 500 million Indian youth, with their increased purchasing power, will influence the global fashion trends, Darlie Koshy, Director General and Chief Executive of Apparel Training and Design Centre (ATDC) said while speaking at the ‘Vastra-2012’ textile seminar.

Mr. Koshy said India is likely to emerge as the fifth biggest consumer market by 2025. Nonetheless, it is going to be a tough job to predict the fashion needs of Indian youth as Tier I and II cities now have more fashion aficionados than metros, he added.

ATDC functions under the aegis of the Union Textiles Ministry and the Rajasthan Industrial Development and Investment Corporation (RIICO).

Professor Vandana Narang from the Fashion Design Department of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), New Delhi, said Indian customers have become more aware and fashion conscious during the past few years, as increasing number of brands and labels continue to enter the Indian market.

According to Ms. Narang, fashion forecasting is all about envisaging the mood and behavioural and purchasing patterns of the consumers, which is no longer influenced by traits like age, income or geographical location.
