Footwear's comeback is great news for an industry that has seen very little growth in the past couple of years. Many trends have contributed to this in this newfound growth. Some drivers include:

-- The popularity of jewels in women's footwear catapulted in 2005. Sales of this type of ornamentation increased fourfold in department stores.

-- 14% of all women's footwear sold in department stores in 2005 featured a wedge heel. This heel type boasted one of the year's largest growth rates of 67 percent.

-- In 2005, more than one out of every four dollars spent on men's footwear in department stores went to a slip-on/loafer. This silhouette is now considered a staple in men's closets.

-- Men's thong footwear is on the rise. Sales of men's thongs in department stores have increased fourfold since 2002. In fact, ten of the top 50 best selling styles in 2005 were thongs.

"The biggest challenge for the footwear industry will be how to sustain this growth and more importantly this passion from the consumer. With so many consumers of all ages reaching for footwear this past year, it will be equally important for brands and retailers to keep their interest, and understanding of consumers' needs in the forefront," said Cohen.
