Y P Singh, Additional Director, General Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), announced that hallmarking of Gold jewellery will be compulsory for all jewelers from January 1, 2008.

BIS had launched this scheme in April 2000, and now has established 34 hallmarking centres all over India, while plans are afoot to set up 34 more.

The procedure to grant license has been simplified and rationalized.

While a three-year fee for jewellers located in metros would be Rs25000, for those in district headquarters it would be Rs20000 and other areas Rs10000.

BIS, based at New Delhi, helps in developing quality culture and consciousness and increase participation of consumers in formulation and implementation of national standards.
