Anti-dumping duties on footwear causes resentment in Sweden

Swedish shoe importers and retailers were displeased with the proposal being mooted by EU to impose anti-dumping duties on Chinese leather shoes.

EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson proposed to introduce EU market anti-dumping duties of up to 19.4 percent on Chinese leather shoes and 16.8 percent on Vietnamese leather shoes from April onwards.

The proposed duty would not affect his company to reduce its imports of Chinese shoes, said Ingemar Charleson, President of Swedish footwear company Nilson.

Consumers may go in for cheaper cloth or synthetic leather shoes instead of leather ones if duties are imposed, industry analysts said.

Sweden's Minister for Industry and Trade Thomas Ostros observed that the consumer would be affected as they would have to pay higher prices.
