Watch maker Citizen to mass produce CMOS camera modules with auto focus function for cellular phones

The Citizen group has concluded that the CMOS system, which is superior to the CCD system in terms of cost, supply stability, and electric power consumption, will constitute the mainstream in the market for cellular phone camera modules of greater than one megapixel capacity. Based on this conviction, the Citizen group will launch the new product on December 1, 2005.
This project is being carried out through the collective endeavors of the entire Citizen group. Citizen Watch Co., Citizen Electronics Co., and Miyota Co. are in charge of development, and Citizen Electronics Co. and Miyota Co. are involved in production and sales. In setting up the production location and production facilities, and in the allocation of human resources, the Citizen group will complete a system that can flexibly meet the changing needs of customers and will organize business activities accordingly.
A CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) is a picture element that uses a complementary metal oxide film semiconductor. Unlike a CCD, a CMOS can be downsized and can be driven by about one-tenth to one-fifth the power that would otherwise be needed. It also has fewer parts. As a result, it is possible to cut both production costs and the failure rate. However, because it produces more electrical noise than a CCD, it is difficult to obtain enough sensitivity from a CMOS, and the image quality (definition) is slightly inferior.
