Spain's Zurbarán inspires designers to create costumes

Art has always inspired fashion and a classic example of this can be seen at the ongoing exhibition, which features a set of 21 costumes inspired from 17 religious paintings of female saints by the noted 16th century Spanish painter Francisco de Zurbarán.

Going on at the Convent of Santa Clara in the city of Seville, Spain, the painting-cum-fashion exhibit is titled as Santas de Zurbarán: Devoción y Persuasión (Zurbarán's Santas: Devotion and Persuasion).

Organized by the Culture and Arts Institute of the City Council (ICAS), the exhibit features designs by several internationally-renowned fashion talents, such as Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, Devout and Lomba, Francis Montesinos, Cristobal Balenciaga, Hannibal Laguna and Victorio and Lucchino.

Spanish designer María José Pedrosa drew inspiration from Zurbarán’s painting, depicting the martyrdom of St. Dorothy, for her creation. Using the same shades of colours as shown in the painting, the ensemble is decorated with apple-shaped flowers and roses.

Running till July 20, 2013, the exhibits also include creations by emerging fashion talents like Cordoba Rafael Perez Giron and Maria Jose Jimenez, who were inspired from the paintings of St. Agnes and Santa Engracia.
