Taiwan Fashion Design Award welcomes foreign designers

The 27th edition of the Taiwan Fashion Design Award, the most prestigious design contest in Taiwan, has broadened its scope and is now for the first time inviting participation of international fashion designers.

The preliminary round of the Award on July 18 would see over 450 young fashion designers from seven countries, excluding Taiwan, competing for the award, organized by the Taiwan Textile Federation (TTF), and hosted by the Industrial Development Bureau under the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA).

Besides Taiwan, designers from China, Canada, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Swaziland and Japan would be competing for the coveted award, Focus Taiwan reported quoting TTF secretary general Justin Huang.

Taiwanese designers account for 56 percent of the total contestants, while Chinese designers account for 27 percent, and designers from other countries make up the rest.

Opening the Taiwanese competition to international designers would enable Taiwan to show its strength in clothing design and also provide a platform for young fashion designers around the world, Mr. Huang said.

The theme for this year’s Taiwan Fashion Design Award (TFDA) is ‘Rethinking’. The official TFDA award website explains the theme in the following words: “In the repeating doomsday prophecy, people begin to slowdown and rethink about things around them, taking a positive attitude to enjoy the art of living and contemplating the boundaries of technology and nature.”

The 15 finalists who make it past the preliminary round will present their creations at a runway show in October.
