India's Arunachal to soon get premier fashion institute

The northeast Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh would soon get a premier fashion institute as the Ministry of Textiles has given an in-principle approval for setting up of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) at Sagalee in Papum Pare district of the state.

NIFT is a premier fashion designing, management and technology institute in India, and it would soon be set up in Sagalee to help students from different parts of the region, Textiles Minister K Sambasiva Rao said during a meeting with Arunachal Chief Minister Nabam Tuki and the state’s Minister for Industries & Textiles Tapang Taloh, in New Delhi.

The Director General of NIFT would be urged to chalk out the modalities with the state government for setting up the institute, Business Standard reported quoting PTI.

The decision to set up NIFT is in accordance with the Arunachal government’s policy to establish centres of excellence in the state to impart world-class training to students from the region and boost their scope of employability.

During the meeting, various issues related to the development and growth of handloom, sericulture and handicraft sectors in the state were also discussed.

Mr. Taloh laid emphasis on following a cluster-based approach for each of the sectors so that the local people benefit the most.

Following the meeting, the Central Ministry of Textiles would be sending a team of officials to Arunachal Pradesh to assess the state’s sericulture potential and frame a long-term plan of central assistance to the state.

Mr. Rao also told the Arunachal Chief Minister that the Ministry would extend schemes for entrepreneurship development and training to artisans in the state.

NIFT was set up in 1986 under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. In 2006, NIFT was granted statutory status through an act of Parliament, empowering the Institute to award degrees and other academic distinctions.

The Institute is a pioneer in envisioning and evolving fashion business education in the country through a network of fifteen professionally managed domestic centres at Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Jodhpur, Kangra, Kannur, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, Patna, Raebareli and Shillong.

NIFT provides a common platform for fashion education, research and training, and has set academic standards and excelled in thought leadership by providing a pool of creative genius and technically competent professionals.
