Swaziland designers form body to strengthen fashion sector

Swaziland’s young designer Khulekani Msweli, along with 14 other designers, aims to strengthen the fashion industry of the country by forming an association for Swaziland’s designers.

The designers of Swaziland believe the domestic fashion industry needs to develop considerably before the country could host a successful fashion week.

The fashion designers of Swaziland feel they need to establish themselves in the local as well as international markets to develop the country’s fashion industry.

Khulekani Msweli, said the country has a very small market and needs to establish a strong fashion sector before hosting a fashion week which comes with a lot of expenses, reports Times of Swaziland.

Swazi designers are currently not recognized in the local or international market and the fashion industry in the country does not have prominent buyers, he added.

The designer hopes that with the formation of Swaziland Designers Association the fashion industry would get a chance to develop further.

Mr. Msweli said the association will assist the designers of the country in many ways as it would provide a forum for them to share ideas among each other, which could prove beneficial for many young designers who graduate and are stuck on what to do next.

Khulekani Msweli owns his own fashion label and retail shop named Jerempaul.

The designers working towards establishing the association include Sphalele, Nonzwakazi Dlamini and Fundisile Dlamini, amongst others.
