Hawaii Governor declares October 2013 as fashion month

The U.S. island state of Hawaii is all set to have a fashion month in October 2013, as declared by the Governor of the state, Neil Abercrombie.

Multiple fashion shows would be held in the month of October to commemorate the Hawaii Fashion Month (HFM), including other events as well as a presentation highlighting the link between films and fashion.

At a press conference in the capital city Honolulu, Governor Abercrombie along with Senator Will Espero, and Georja Skinner and Mary Alice Evans of the Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism (DBEDT) declared October as the month of fashion in the state of Hawaii.

Mr. Abercrombie said, “I’m hoping to do everything I can to try to make it attractive and possible for fashion to take place on an ongoing basis, we want to build Hawaii as an international retail [fashion] destination.”

Mr. Abercrombie presented the Hawaii Fashion Incubator (HiFi) co-founders and HFM co-chairs Melissa White and Toby Portner with a written proclamation in recognition of the fashion month.

Hifi co-founder Toby Portner said, “When we came together seven years ago, we envisioned this, and it seemed so far away, now that it is here, we’re looking forward to see what’s to come.”

HFM aims to raise awareness of Hawaii as a unique, creative and competitive fashion destination while bringing sustainable growth to the industry that comprises design, manufacturing, retail, art, education and more.

The fashion month intends to provide the people of Hawaii with an opportunity to explore the industry’s enormous potential, strengthen relationships across the state, nation and world, and build collaborative opportunities to increase the export of Hawaiian designs.

The fashion month will conclude with the Governor’s Fashion Awards on October 31.
