Following announcement made early this year for establishing Dubai as a fashion hub vying with leading fashion hubs like London, New York and Paris, through 2020, several steps have been taken in this direction to achieve the goal and further efforts are still on.

The latest effort in this direction is signing of a decree by Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for bringing together the public and the private sector to encourage growth, innovation and sustainability in fashion industry of the city.

Besides this, the General Secretariat of the Executive Council of Dubai and the Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone Authority (DTMFZA) have also inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch ‘Dubai Fashion 2020’, again aiming to establish Dubai as a fashion hub.

The move aims at developing economic opportunities in the fashion and apparel industry of Dubai, and boosting its global competitiveness through steps like hosting of several fashion events to draw global investors to local industry.

It also aims to improve employability prospects in the apparel value chain, including in manufacturing, retail and designing sector of the country, through training programs.

Furthermore, the construction of the Dubai Design District (D3) near the Business Bay area of the city has also been embarked on, and announcement has also been made for constitution of the Dubai Design and Fashion Council.

The Council proposed to be set up under DTMFZA would focus on laying a roadmap for development of the design and fashion industry in the region while fostering talent and promoting creativity across the Emirates.

Apart from these initiatives, UAE has also started several international fashion events at home with participation of local as well as global brands and designers. These events allow the participants to develop an understanding about each other’s culture and also draw more investors to the region.

While the rulers are playing their part for establishing Dubai as a fashion hub, the fashion industry is also not lagging behind. Several brands are now participating in international trade and fashion events, like renowned fashion brand of the UAE, Zari O’ Breesam, recently represented the country’s fashion industry at the Italian International Fashion Week 2013 in Rome.

According to experts, participation in such events sends a strong message to the world about the maturity of the fashion industry in the UAE.
