Designers join recycling initiative to help children

Fashion Upcycled - an initiative aiming to reuse excess raw materials from fashion designers' was announced at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2013.

Amongst the many designers who have signed up to support this cause, Anita Dongre, Nishka Lulla and Payal Singhal launched this initiative along with Mana & Suniel Shetty of Save The Children India, Saket Dhankar of IMG Reliance and Poornima Lamba of Lakmé, at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter Festive 2013.

The designers showed their support and presented their excess material to the beneficiaries who are supported by the non-profit organization, Save The Children India.

The panel spoke about the importance of upcycling and the designers were happy to see their excess raw material being used for a good cause. The beneficiaries of Save The Children India will use the excess material to make products such as batwas, cushion covers, trays, table runners to name a few. The proceeds from the sale of these products will be used for the upliftment of underprivileged women and children.

Save The Children India executes Vocational Training Programs for young women under the umbrella of W.I.S.E - Women’s Institute for Social Education. A brainchild of Ms. Mana Shetty, the women trained under this program create products for retail.

The aim of ‘Fashion Upcycled’ is to help reduce the costs of producing the wares at W.I.S.E, which will consequently increase the sums that go towards charity. The excess raw material collected from the participating designers will be used to create retail products which include cushion covers, table runners, jute bags, trays, tissue box covers, market bags, batwas, mogra bags, etc which will be sold at Araaish Trousseau taking place in Mumbai on September 3rd and 4th

Speaking on the occasion Anita Dongre said “I am very happy to be a part of Save The Children India’s Fashion Upcycled initiative. As a designer, we sample a lot before we close on the final collection for a season. During this process, a lot of excess raw material is generated, and I am happy to see it going to good use! Upcycling is a huge focus for me personally, and for us as a company”

Mana Shetty added “It’s great to see that people are becoming conscious of their responsibility towards the society, and are embracing their compassionate side to elicit change in the lives of those who seek our help. We are grateful to the designers who have partnered with us, and look forward to receiving support from many more from the fashion fraternity”

Saket Dhankar, Head-Fashion, IMGReliance, present at the conference said “We at Lakme Fashion Week are socially responsible and have always made a conscious effort in promoting and supporting relevant causes. We are excited to provide our platform to encourage designers to contribute towards such initiatives.”

With an aim to contributeto the cause, the fashion body at IMG Reliance agreed to launch and support this exciting initiative, which was formally announced at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2013.
