Staying true to its tradition of staging larger than life catwalk sets, the French fashion house Chanel once again presented a unique runway setting, with an art gallery-like stage, on the penultimate day of Paris Fashion Week.

Created under the aesthetic guidance of its creative director Karl Lagerfeld, the label’s latest ready-to-wear range showcased an abundant usage of tweed, chains, pearls and quilting. The line included pink suits, textured grey leather dresses, knee-length skirts with tiny bows and draped flowing numbers decorated with layers of silk ribbons.

‘Roman opera’ and ‘African tribal ethnicity’ both blended into a heady concoction of sophisticated looks with ethnic touches at the Milan-based brand Valentino’s show. Designed by the label’s joint creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, the collection displayed floor sweeping robes, short centurion-style dresses, embroidered skirts and simple pale-coloured shirts.

British label Alexander McQueen, under the creative direction of Sarah Burton, presented an extraordinary Spring/Summer 2014 line, inspired heavily from the artworks of Mondrian and Picasso. The pieces included armour-like bodices, leather pleated dresses, tightly beaded long gowns with feathers and vibrantly hued coats.

The 29-year-old Dutch fashion designer Iris Van Herpen took inspiration from various genres of music to create a dark 16-piece line. Made from techno fabrics with touch-sensitive electronic chip inserts, the collection offered cropped jackets, shimmery cross-over dresses and fitted black sheaths.
