America hosts batik design competition

Traditional Indonesian designs met flamboyant American styles at the just held second edition of American Batik Design Competition, a contest that aims to introduce and promote batik innovations in America’s culturally diversified society.

Co-organized by the Indonesian embassy in Washington DC and the Consulate Generals of Indonesia in Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco, the contest was held under the theme of ‘The spirit of America in the heritage of batik’.

Meant specifically for the US-based design talents, the competition attracted more than a dozen applicants from various streams such as designers, businessmen, students and art connoisseurs.

The contest was won by the Philadelphia studio artist and illustrator Donna Backues for her design ‘Ring of Fire Lighting the Flame of Liberty’.

Anica Buckson, a fashion design student from Massachusetts, was placed on the second position for her creation titled North Native America, while Christiane Grauert, professor at Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, Wisconsin, grabbed the third position for the Many Faces Many Voices line in the competition.

The winning ensembles were specially printed in Yogyakarta and were demonstrated at the gala dinner-cum-fashion show in Washington DC along with the designs from the contest’s five other finalists.

First conducted in 2011, the competition has seen batik with various America-inspired themes such as cowboy, totem, wheat, star and stripes, beat/buffaloes and electronic QR code.
